Ganesh Chaturthi – the festival that brings people from different creed together, dancing to the beats of the dhol and tasha, people chanting Ganpati Bappa Morya! Celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, this festival lasts for ten days where Lord Ganesha is honored by setting up a plethora of temporary pandals (shrines) and worshipped in and around the country.

Ganesh Chaturthi is vividly celebrated in different parts of India, and its more exuberant in Western India, in Maharashtra. This festival mainly comprises of four main rituals during the festival – Pranapratishhtha – the process of infusing the deity into a murti or idol, Shhodashopachara – 16 forms of paying tribute to Ganesha,Uttarpuja – Puja after which the idol could be shifted after it’s infusion, Ganpati Visarjan – immersion of the Idol in the river.

Recipe for Modaks:

  • 2 Cup grated fresh coconut
  • 1/2 Cup mixture of unsalted pistachios and unsalted cashews
  • 1/2 Pinch of cardamom powder
  • 1/2 Cup milk
  • 1 Cup jaggery or sugar
  • For the outer cover
  • 1 Cup rice flour
  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • 1 Cup water
  • 1/2 tsp Salt

18 Quick Steps for Making Scrumptious Modaks:               

Method

  1. All you need to do first is prepare the filling. How you do it?
  2. Combine coconut + milk + jaggery or sugar – Mix the ingredients well.
  3. Cook it over medium flame, stir continuously till they are mixed properly.
  4. Add cashews and pistachios and cook for about one minute.
  5. Now add cardamom powder.
  6. Keep aside the mixture to allow it to cool down.
  7. Fill water in the vessel and boil.
  8. Now add flour, ghee and salt, stir quickly to remove the lumps of ghee and flour.
  9. Cover the vessel with a lid for some time and let it cook.
  10. After a while start stirring the mix.
  11. Now remove the pan from heat and transfer all the mixture on a flat plate.
  12. Knead it to make soft dough. It should be neither too sticky nor too dry.
  13. Grease your palm with ghee properly and make circular balls of the dough.
  14. Flatten the dough to make a cup shape. Put 3/4 tsp coconut filling into this cup.
  15. Dip thumb and index finger in the oil and make 5-6 small pinches on the outside edges of the cup.
  16. Bring them together on top and join to shape a peak.
  17. Put Modaks on a greased plate. Make rest of the Modaks in the similar way.
  18. Now steam them for about 15 minutes and serve with ghee.
